Any copy protection scheme will be rapidly broken and the cracked files will be anonymously distributed through things like Freenet. The only way artists will be able to make money directly from the digital distribution of their music is if payment is voluntary. Here is a great essay describing a voluntary payment system. You would record all the little details of your day to day life and then run the file through a parser that would make helpful recommendations.
