Sid Meier Slashdot Interview
The Slashdot interview with Sid Meier, designer of my two favorite computer games (Civilization and Alpha Centauri), is up.
Will Wright Presents Spore
Will Wright’s new game sounds a lot like SimUniverse or SimEverything.
Wing Commander – Privateer Remake
I played around with the Wing Commander – Privateer Remake last night and it brought back many fond memories. Privateer was one of my favorite games of the 90s and the remake is extremely faithful albeit a little buggy.
Does Linux Have Game?
Tom’s Hardware tackles the present and future of Linux gaming.
In fact, Linux driver development for graphics cards can even represent a more streamlined process than it is for Windows. “The problem with Windows is that there is so much different software out there and the quality varies, and any one piece of poorly written software can take down the whole system,” Triantos said. “Printer drivers, multimedia devices, and all the junk in the bottom right hand of your system tray with Windows all add up to lots of opportunities for someone to make mistakes. Linux doesn’t have all of those levels, but doesn’t have those risks as well.”

A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran

Down to a sunless sea.
Computer games
Wow, I’ve had almost the exact same relationship to computer games as Rafe Colburn, including recently giving them up (although I do that with some regularity). However, I scoff at Rafe’s 6 hour Civilization run. I’m pretty sure I’ve hit at least 20 hours straight playing Civ.
Kids Play
EGM gets nine kids, ages 10 to 13, to play classic video games from the 70s and 80s and writes down what they say with hilarious results.
On Tetris:
Tim: Which button do I press to make the blocks explode?
EGM: Sorry, they don’t explode.
Becky: This is boring. Maybe if it had characters and stuff and different levels, it would be OK. If things blew up or something or—
Sheldon: If there were bombs.
Becky: Yeah, or special bricks. Like, if a yellow brick touched a red brick it would blow up and you’d have to start over.
John: Why haven’t I won yet? I’ve paired up so many of the same color.
EGM: Don’t worry about colors.
John: I just lined up six of the same color. Why didn’t they blow up?
EGM: Nothing blows up.
